Introduction

Hyaluronic acid is a sugar that occurs naturally in the body, including the skin, eyes, and joints. The primary function of hyaluronic acid is to provide moisture to these areas of the body.

As skin ages, our cells produce less hyaluronic acid and existing hyaluronic acid starts to degrade. This can lead to age-induced dryness and is also one of the factors responsible for the visible signs of skin ageing such as fine lines and wrinkles, a loss of volume and a loss of elasticity.

What is ProfHilo®?

The first of its kind, ProfHilo is a revolutionary ‘beneath the skin’ hyaluronic acid moisturising treatment. In the form of an injectable gel, ProfHilo has a prolonged stimulating effect on the dermal cells which counteracts skin laxity and improves and restores firmness of the skin.

One of the highest concentrations of hyaluronic acid on the market, ProfHilo not only boosts and hydrates the skin, but also remodels ageing and sagging tissue.

Unlike wrinkle reducing and dermal filler treatments, ProfHilo stimulates collagen and elastin, attracting water in the deeper layers of the skin.

Treatment areas

The most common areas of treatment include the face and neck and can also be used for the décolletage, hands, arms, knees and abdomen where it would effectively treat skin laxity. The treatment is suitable for men and women as well as offering skin benefits to all ages.

What to expect at your appointment

As with any aesthetic procedure, it is absolutely essential that a full and comprehensive consultation is performed prior to any treatment. The consultation will always include your past medical and surgical history, lifestyle, allergies and medications.

ProfHilo is injectable and your treatment will involve several injections at specific points. Two treatments are recommended, spaced four weeks apart, and you’ll see results for six to nine months. A third treatment may be recommended in the skin with a more severe loss of elasticity.

What are the results?

Results include an improvement of the skin’s texture, firmness and radiance in addition to reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Results last on average of about six months but vary from person to person. Many have reported still seeing improvement after nine months or longer.

What are the risks?

You might be a little tender after your treatment, but you will be able to go about your normal daily life immediately afterwards. A small lump may remain where the product is placed for up to 24 hours after treatment. Some people report a warming sensation under the skin as it spreads and very occasionally an itching sensation. A small amount of redness, swelling or bruising at the injection site is possible, depending on how delicate your skin is. This should subside after a few hours.

ProfHilo® in the UK

Unlike Botox®, ProfHilo administration does not require a prescription. This means that the Industry is essentially unregulated. If you are considering having ProfHilo it is recommended that you check that your practitioner is registered with a professional body. Although ProfHilo is classed as a medical device and does not require a prescription, it is recommended that you choose a prescribing practitioner because if something does go wrong, you may need a prescription to correct this.
