As far back as 1500BC Egyptian physicians would use a type of sandpaper to abrase the top layer of the skin to remove scars.
More recently, in the past 100 years, there have been various different methods used to remove the top layer of skin such as cumbersome human powered machines and wire brushes. However, these treatments came with complications such as a high risk of infection, long downtime and pain during the treatment.
Physicians and aestheticians use a variety of facial resurfacing techniques to improve the appearance of the skin by addressing skin quality, age spots, fine lines, and scarring.
Microdermabrasion is a cosmetic procedure that uses fine crystals and a vacuum to exfoliate the skin and remove dead skin cells from the outer layer. This safe procedure is designed to reduce fine lines, minor scars, wrinkles, sun damage and age spots to make your skin smoother and younger looking.The treatment uses a stream of non-allergenic crystals (crystal microdermabrasion) to remove your skin’s outermost layers of dead cells.The handset then uses a mild suction to draw away the crystal and skin debris to reveal your new and improved complexion.Microdermabrasion removes the top layers of the skin called the stratum corneum. Similarly to brushing your teeth, microdermabrasion helps to remove the debris from your skin. The SkinBase™ Facial is chemical free and non-invasive yet achieves amazing results revealing younger, healthier looking skin from the very first treatment. The skin’s appearance is further improved through increased collagen & elastin production as your body produces a new layer of skin.
Although microdermabrasion is most well known as a facial treatment, it can be used on most areas of your body such as your face, neck, chest, back and hands, if they require exfoliation. A handheld device directs the stream of crystal over the treatment area and, where necessary, target specific zones.
As with any aesthetic procedure, it is absolutely essential that a full and comprehensive consultation is performed prior to any treatment. The consultation will always include your past medical and surgical history, lifestyle, allergies and medications.
The skin will be cleansed and the wand will deliver a fine jet of crystals over the skin which the vacuum removes. The resurfaced skin is then treated with a neutral moisturiser and an SPF.
In as little as 30 minutes a microdermabrasion facial will exfoliate and rejuvenate to reveal more youthful looking skin. Human skin regenerates at 30 day intervals and regular microdermabrasion treatments performed every 7-10 days (which is what we recommend during a course of treatment) will ensure continued improvement for your skin concerns.
After the treatment the skin may feel tight with mild redness. It is important to use an SPF after your treatment. There is very little ‘down time’ and you can return to your day immediately after treatment.
Microdermabrasion does not require a prescription or a medical background. It is recommended that you choose a practitioner with the appropriate experience, knowledge base, equipment and product.
An experienced practitioner will always ensure that a thorough consultation is performed and should be happy to answer any questions you may have. Consider asking the following;
What is your level of experience and qualifications?

- Are there any risks or side effects I could experience?
- What will happen if anything goes wrong?
