The initial consultation is arguably the most important part of any aesthetic journey. Before any treatment takes place, a proper consultation allows both you and your practitioner to decide whether a treatment is appropriate, safe, realistic, and worth doing at all.
It is completely normal to feel nervous, excited, self-conscious, unsure, overwhelmed — or occasionally all five at once while pretending to look calm in the waiting room. A good consultation should never feel rushed or pressured. Instead, it should feel informative, honest, collaborative, and safe. At Radiant, consultations are treated as an essential part of clinical care — not simply a quick pre-treatment formality.
Take your time
A thorough consultation takes time — in fact, it is often the longest part of the entire process. During a first appointment, practitioners may spend 45 minutes, an hour, or sometimes longer discussing concerns, goals, medical history, previous treatments, expectations, and treatment options. If a consultation feels rushed, overly sales-focused, or dismissive, that can be a warning sign. Good practitioners understand that patients need time to think, ask questions, process information, and make informed decisions. Because aesthetic treatment should never feel like ordering a takeaway.
Be honest about your medical history
One of the most important parts of any consultation is medical history. Safe prescribing and treatment planning rely on accurate information — including medical conditions, medications, allergies, previous cosmetic procedures, previous complications, and pregnancy or breastfeeding status. Even information that feels unrelated can sometimes affect treatment suitability, healing, safety, and risk of complications. Your practitioner is not asking questions to be intrusive. They are asking because safe treatment depends on it.

Many practitioners will ask patients to describe their concerns while looking in a mirror. Although this can initially feel slightly uncomfortable, it is incredibly useful — allowing both practitioner and patient to understand facial concerns clearly, identify asymmetry, discuss treatment goals realistically, and create a tailored plan. Clinical photographs may also be taken to assess progress, plan treatment, and monitor results safely and accurately. They are not there to personally attack your left-side profile.
You are allowed to relax
Consultations should not feel intimidating. This is your opportunity to ask questions, explore options, learn about treatments, and discuss concerns openly. Importantly: you are never obligated to proceed with treatment. A good consultation should leave you feeling informed, comfortable, and respected — not pressured into making immediate decisions. Because "limited-time offer if you inject today" is not usually the hallmark of ethical healthcare.
Building trust matters
Trust between practitioner and patient is essential in aesthetics. This is your opportunity to ask about qualifications, clinical background, experience, training, complication management, aftercare, and follow-up support. You should feel confident that your practitioner understands anatomy, prioritises safety, can manage complications, and will be honest with you — including when the answer is: "No, I don't think that treatment is right for you."
Understanding prescribing in aesthetics
Many patients are unaware that injectable toxins such as Botox® are prescription-only medications within the UK — meaning they can legally only be obtained via a legitimate UK pharmacy following an appropriate consultation and prescription process. Non-medical practitioners are not legally able to independently prescribe or purchase these products in the same way as regulated medical professionals.
At Radiant, products are sourced only from reputable UK pharmacies to ensure authenticity, correct storage, patient safety, and clinical standards. Because injectable medications should not be treated like mystery parcels from the internet. Cheap products are often cheap for a reason.
Your practitioner also has the right to say no
A consultation is not simply about whether a patient wants treatment — it is also about whether treatment is appropriate, ethical, and safe. Good practitioners will sometimes decline treatment if expectations are unrealistic, risks outweigh benefits, the treatment is unsuitable, or another option would be safer. This is not judgement. It is professionalism. And honestly, one of the strongest signs that you are dealing with someone who genuinely prioritises patient care over profit.
Questions you should feel comfortable asking
A professional practitioner should welcome these conversations — not become mysteriously defensive the moment safety is mentioned.
Aesthetic consultations are far more than a quick chat before treatment. They are a crucial part of safe practice, ethical prescribing, treatment planning, patient education, and building trust. At Radiant, consultations are designed to ensure patients feel heard, informed, safe, comfortable, and fully involved in decision-making. Because the best aesthetic results do not start with pressure or impulse. They start with honesty, education, and a practitioner who values your safety as much as your outcome.
